Claim #2
“One cause of environmental injustice is institutionalized racism. Institutionalized racism is defined as the practical reality of deliberately and intentionally targeting neighborhoods and communities comprised of a majority of people of low socio-economic status and of a collective group of individuals of color and is considered to be the natural outgrowth of racism (Carder, "Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy").”
Racism was a big issue around the time of the Civil Rights Movement and it is the reason why people of color were constantly taken advantage of. People of color were not treated fairly and were not seen as human in the eyes of some Americans. This way of thinking began to grow in institutions like schools, work places, and the government. As racism institutionalized it began to be used even more than usual but it was more discrete because others saw it as normal actions. Corporations that were mainly run by whites purposely used racism to take advantage of people of color. They must have believed that since they were people of color it would not matter if a power plant resided near their communities. They must have also believed that people of color would be okay with a little pollution since they were not considered human to some people and because it would not matter if they were treated unfairly in this manner since others were treating them in much more violent ways.
