Claim #1
“Research studies conducted by social scientists postulate that environmental racism can be traced back to urban sprawl and subsequent suburbanization. Urban sprawl is defined as the, ‘the unplanned, uncontrolled spreading of urban development into areas adjoining the edge of a city’. Similarly, suburbanization is the term used to describe the ‘growth of areas on the fringes of major cities’ (Raed, "Incidence of Environmental Racism and its Subsequent Impact on", 2010).”
As cities began to grow then that led to more communities being formed meaning there would be more necessities to maintain all the people. Unfortunately one of those necessities was energy and that was produced by the power plans that eventually began to be built. As they were built, whites moved away from them leaving that area open to newcomers. Those newcomers were Latinos and African Americans who were forced to reside there, as they were not welcome with the whites. The minorities were unaware that living near power plants would have such an effect on them. Since these minorities were naïve to the effects, more corporations began to purposely build their power plants in communities inhabited mainly by people of color.
